Schwarz-Rot-Gold feiert in Hamburg – Black-Red-Gold Celebrating in Hamburg

Symbols Alive

The two characters in the middle, the man with the bucket and the woman, are historic figures from Hamburg. In a popular folk play the woman - Zitronenjette, a poor woman selling lemons for a living – is usually played by a man. Like Jette the water carrier was regularly mocked by urchins, calling after him ‘Hummel, Hummel’ to which he answered ‘Mors, Mors’ a shortening of Lower German ‘Klei mi am Mors’, which is a very insulting way to say ‘leave me alone’.
